What is that case? It has become interesting. The case in which Kavitha was arrested was ‘Delhi Liquor Scam’. The scandal led to major developments across the country. Leaders of Aam Aadmi Party, YSR Congress Party and other parties in AP have already been arrested in this case. What is it about this case that has made such an impact? Interested.
This is Delhi’s liquor policy.
It is known that there is Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi. Delhi government has brought a new liquor policy in 2021. A part of this policy is ‘handover of liquor sales to private companies’. In a new policy, the government has taken a decision that ‘retail liquor shops, which have been under government rule for a long time, should be handed over to private individuals’. The government thinks that ‘with this decision, the government will get an income of Rs.9,500 crores’. The Council of Ministers approved this policy and sent it to the Lieutenant Governor. The Lieutenant Governor gave his approval in November 2021 after keeping it with him for four months. 849 liquor shops were opened in Delhi through this system. A major change in the new policy is to keep liquor shops open till 3 am. Liquor home delivery facility has also come.
A key twist took place in April 2022 after the implementation of the liquor policy. Naresh Kumar has been appointed as the Chief Secretary of Delhi Government. After taking charge, he reviewed the ‘New Liquor Policy’. It has been found that there have been irregularities in this procedure. CS Naresh Kumar reported that mistakes were made in the allocation of liquor shops.
It was confirmed that this policy was brought to benefit private individuals. All these matters were reported to the Lieutenant Governor. In July 2022, the Lieutenant Governor ordered the CBI to conduct an inquiry into this liquor policy. With this decision, the liquor scandal came out at once. In the wake of these developments, the Delhi government canceled the liquor policy for a few months. But the ED along with the CBI stepped in and investigated the scam. That investigation led to today’s arrest of Kavitha.
These are the allegations.
Liquor shops were made available to a few. The then Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia incurred a loss of Rs. 145 crores due to changes in the policy of allocating liquor to a few liquor shops against the rules. Delhi Government has also waived. Issue of L-1 category licenses and issuance of permits. Issuance of credit notes to retail vendors. Manish Sisodia along with his followers Dinesh Arora, Amit Arora and Arjun Pandey are involved in corruption.
Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia was first arrested by the ED in this scam case. Later, it was found that political leaders from Telugu states were involved in this case. YSRCP MP Magunta Srinivasula Reddy’s son was arrested in this order. Unexpectedly, the name of Kalvakuntla’s poem came out. Twice he himself attended Kavitha’s trial in Delhi. Despite sending several notices to appear for investigation, Kavitha did not come. The case was temporarily adjourned after filing a petition in the Supreme Court. ED suddenly arrested Kavitha in the background of elections. He was arrested under Money Laundering Act 2022 (15 of 2003). AAP leader and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal is also likely to be arrested in this case soon.
