Israel Hamas War:
After several weeks of upheaval, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) finally passed a proposal for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. In the voting on this proposal on Monday, 14 out of 15 members voted in favor, while the US was absent from this voting.
Thus, this resolution was passed 14-0. In this resolution, there is a demand for immediate unconditional release of Israeli citizens held hostage. Council Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressed happiness over the passing of this resolution and also said that everyone will have to implement this resolution immediately, otherwise it will be unforgivable for all of us.
Demand for immediate release of Israeli citizens
Guterres tweeted on his social media handle and said, ‘The United Nations Security Council approved the long-awaited resolution on Gaza, which demands immediate ceasefire and immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. All parties should implement this resolution immediately. Negligence in this will be unforgivable for all of us.’ The United States was absent in the voting on this resolution, while China says that it supports the new draft resolution of the United Nations Security Council on ‘immediate’ Gaza ceasefire.
Mozambique’s ambassador presented the proposal
According to Al Jazeera’s report, this draft resolution demanding ceasefire in the UNSC was presented by Mozambique’s ambassador to the United Nations, Pedro Comisario Afonso. Presenting the proposal, he said, “We express our deep appreciation for this draft resolution and the efforts of all the members of this council to end the disastrous situation in the Gaza Strip.”
‘Everyone has to come forward to stop the war’
The Mozambican ambassador said, “The situation in Gaza is a matter of serious concern for the entire international community. In fact, the escalation of conflict in the Gaza Strip and its disastrous consequences are also threatening international peace and security. Therefore, now the world community must come forward to stop this war.”
This draft resolution was also supported by Algeria, Guyana, Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, South Korea and Switzerland.
The resolution was presented for the second time in 4 days
Al Jazeera reported that permanent members of the Council Russia and China on Friday vetoed a US resolution that did not call for an immediate ceasefire. After this, the resolution was presented again by the non-permanent members of the Council and lines calling for an immediate ceasefire were also added to it.
What will Israel do now?
It is mandatory for any member nation to follow the resolution passed in the United Nations Security Council. After the resolution is passed, instructions are sent to the member nation by the Council. If it does not follow those instructions, economic sanctions can be imposed on it. If the matter is not resolved even after that, military action can also be taken against it by the Council.

Will there be a problem here?
The resolution passed in the council also talks about unconditional release of all Israeli hostages held by Hamas from 7 October. In such a situation, the ball will now be in Hamas’ court. If Hamas terrorists do not release Israeli citizens, then Israel will also get a chance to justify its retaliatory action and in such a situation the council will not be able to do anything. In such a situation, it remains to be seen what stance Hamas takes now after the passing of this resolution.
