Shiromundanam case: The court has given a key verdict in the Shiromundanam case which created a sensation at that time. YSR Congress MLA Thota Trimurtulu has sentenced 9 people.
18 months each in the atrocity case…The SC and ST atrocity court imposed a fine of 1 lakh 50 thousand rupees in addition to the sentence of 6 months per IPC section…However, the police are waiting for the judge’s orders… Police have deployed a vehicle near the district court. There is a possibility that the accused, including the trio, will be taken into custody and send to jail.
Meanwhile, on December 29, 1996, Dalit youths were humiliated in Venkataiah palem of Ramachandrapuram mandal. Five Dalit youths were tortured for election reasons. Two of them were shaved and their eyebrows drawn. This incident created a stir across the state. Dalit groups have mobilized in large number to get justice for the victims. As a result, the case was investigated for 27 years. A person named Venkataramana has died among the victims. The other four are fighting to get justice for themselves. A total of 24 witnesses have died… and six have worked as special public prosecutor in the case.
An FIR was registered as Crime No. 1/1997 in connection with the case on January 1,1997. The case was registered at the Draksharama police Station. The case was reopened in February 2008. However, in the 1994 general election, Thota Trimurtulu contested as an independent from Ramachandrapuram and won. The victims told the court that they had stopped the triumvirate group from trying to do rigging .so they had personally taken sides.

The victims told the court that the cases of fence destruction around the farm and eve teasing were made illegal and they were insulted among the villagers… But the Tota Trimurti is saying that it has nothing to do with the panchayat between the village elders. The investigation of this case went up to high court… There was a debate for some years that the victims were not Dalits but converted Christians… The Collector was also ordered to conduct a comprehensive investigation on the caste certificate. However, the High court had ordered that the investigation of the case should be completed within six months. The Visakha SC and ST Court bench heard the arguments of both sides till the third of this month and took the details in detail.
