Why is Anti-Terrorism Day celebrated only on 21May?
After the brutal assassination of former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi on 21 May 1991, this day was declared to be celebrated as National Anti-Terrorism Day.
Actually, Rajiv Gandhi had gone to Sriperumbudur (Tamil Nadu) to participate in an election rally. Before the rally, Rajiv Gandhi was moving forward accepting the greetings of the people, when a woman member of the Liberation of Tamil Tigers Eelam (LTTE), who had hidden explosives inside her clothes, detonated the explosive on the pretext of touching Rajiv Gandhi’s feet. Suddenly, a huge cloud of smoke rose from the loud explosion, by the time the smoke settled, 25 people present there including Rajiv Gandhi were blown to pieces. A large number of people were also injured. Since then, 21st May is being celebrated as Terrorism Day in memory of Rajiv Gandhi.
Importance of National Anti-Terrorism Day
Terrorism is at its peak all over the world, due to which thousands of people are killed animosity arises between two countries, due to which an atmosphere of unrest prevails. The events of National Anti-Terrorism Day strengthen the importance of national unity, integrity and peace. Also, the common people are made aware about the ill effects of terrorism. People are told about the fear and harm caused by terrorism.

On the occasion of Anti-Terrorism Day, various programs are organized by various government, non-government and voluntary organizations.
Oath ceremony: On this day, anti-terrorism oath is taken on various platforms. Seminars, debates, drawing competitions and competitions like essay and speech are organized on topics related to terrorism.
Rally and march past: At some places, anti-terrorism rally and march past are organized as per a pre-planned scheme.
Media and social media: On this occasion messages against terrorism are broadcast through media and social media, awareness is spread in the society
Seminar: The causes of terrorism and its prevention are discussed in educational institutions and other organizations across the country. People express their view.
Organization of cultural programs: On this day, people are made aware about the important of peace and non-violence through various cultural programs.
