According to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) holiday list, private and government banks will remain closed on May 23 (Thursday) on the occasion of Buddha Purnima in some states. But digital banking serviced will be available. Banks are closed for Buddha Purnima in many states. There are at least 10 holidays in this month i.e. May 2024. This includes Saturday holiday every second and fourth week and all Sundays of every week. As we know that the list of holiday varies state wise, and RBI decides the holiday calendar of all banks keeping in mind the holidays announced by the state government. Let us know in which states banks will be closed on Buddha Purnima.

In which states and cities are banks closed?

Banks will remain closed in Tripura, Maharashtra, Mizoram, Madhya Pradesh, Chandigarh, Uttara Khand, Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu, Uttara Pradesh, West Bengal, New Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh and Srinagar. Banks will also remain closed in these cities-Agartala, Aizawl, Belapur, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Itanagar, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Raipur, Ranchi, Shimla and Srinagar.

Bank Holidays in May.

According to the list of holidays of the Reserve Bank of India (RBL), banks will remain closed for 14 days in May 2024. Banks remain closed in May on the occasion of Maharashtra Day or May Day (Labor Day), Lok Sabha General Elections 2024, Rabindranath Tagore’s Birthday, Basava Jayanti or Akshaya Tritiya, Lok Sabha General Elections 2024, State Day, Buddha Purnima and Nazrul Jayanti. There are only three nationals’ holidays declared by the Government of India-Republic Day (26 January), Independence Day (15 August), and Gandhi Jayanti (2 October).

What is Buddha Purnima?

Buddha Jayanti or Vaisakhi is the most important day for Buddhists around the world. It is celebrated on the full moon day of Baisakh in May. This day commemorates all the important events in the life of lord Buddha. This includes his birth in Lumbini, enlightenment in Bodhgaya and entering Mahaparinivana in Kushinagar.
