PTI, New Delhi. In India 290 people have been confirmed infected with the sub-variant KP.2 of Covid-19 and 34 people with KP. 1. Both these sub-variants are responsible for the increase in infection cases in Singapore. Both of these are sub-variant of the JN1 variant and are not related to cases of hospitalization and serious illness. So, there is no reason to worry or panic.

Sources said that INSACAG is sensitive to the matter and can deal with the new variant if it emerges. According to INSACAG, a total of 34 cases of KP.1 were reported in seven states and union territories, out of which 23 cases were registered in Bengal alone.

Apart from this, one case has been reported in Goa, two in Gujarat. one in Haryana, four in Maharashtra, two in Rajasthan and one in Uttarakhand,290 cases of KP.2 sub-variant have been reported, out of which the highest number of 148 cases are from Maharasthra alone.

Apart from this, one person in Delhi, 12 in Goa, 23 in Gujarat, three in Haryana, four in Karnataka, one in Madhya Pradesh, 17 in Odisha, 21 in Rajasthan, eight in Uttar Pradesh, 16 in Uttarakhand and 36 in Bengal were infected with this sub variant. Singapore has seen a wave of Covid-19 in recent days and between May 5 and 11, 25,900 cases of infection with KP.1 and KP.2 sub variants have been reported.

What is INSACOG?

The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) is a national multi-agency consortium of genome sequencing laboratories (RGSL) established by the Government of India on 30 December 2020. Initially this consortium included 10 laboratories. Later the scope of laboratories under INSACOG was expanded and currently there are 28 laboratories under this consortium, monitoring genomic variation in SARS-Co-V-2.
