Meanwhile, former Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya has been named the interim head coach of the team ahead of the limited overs home series against India later this month. 55-year-old left-handed player Jayasuriya, who bowls spin along with aggressive opening batting, will replace England’s Chris Silverwood. Silverwood resigned after the team’s poor performance in the T20 World Cup. The team could not progress beyond the league stage in this World Cup played in West Indies and America.

According to the report of ‘Daily Mirror’ newspaper, Jayasuriya will also take charge of Sri Lanka’s England Test tour. Jayasuriya has also been the chief selector of the team before this. Jayasuriya, one of the most aggressive batsmen of his time, was the team’s consultant during the T20 World Cup. Jayasuriya scored 6973 runs in 110 Tests for Sri Lanka between 1991 and 2007. During this period, his average has been 40.07 and he scored 14 centuries and 31 half-centuries. He has scored 13,430 runs in 445 ODIs with the help of 28 centuries and 68 half-centuries. Jayasuriya has also taken 98 wickets in Tests and 323 wickets in ODIs. He was an important member of the Sri Lankan team that won the World Cup in 1996.
