IPL 2025 Auction
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to meet all the Indian Premier League (IPL) team owners later this month to discuss player retention rules, salary cap, right to match and other issues ahead of the mega auction.
According to a Cricbuzz report, the BCCI has asked IPL franchise owners to be available for a meeting scheduled to be held on July 30 or 31 at the board’s office in Mumbai. The main agenda of the meeting will be player retention rules.
Teams were allowed to retain a maximum of four players during the IPL 2022 mega auction. A maximum of three Indian players were allowed to be retained. On the other hand, only two foreign players could be retained. However, ahead of the mega auction scheduled ahead of IPL 2025, most franchises have reportedly asked the BCCI to allow more retentions.
Franchise demands
The Cricbuzz report states that “There have been varying opinions on the number of retentions for a franchise. Some teams argue that continuity is necessary, as most franchises have been in existence for over 17 years now and the number of retentions allowed should be up to eight. There will also be debate on whether the mega-auction should have a Right to Match (RTM) option. The RTM option was not available during the 2022 mega auction, but some franchises are believed to be in favour of bringing it back.
Salary cap may increase
The salary cap is also expected to be discussed between the BCCI and the franchises. “There will also be discussions on the salary cap, which is expected to be around Rs 120 crore in the first year of the next three-year cycle. Following this, the retention value of each player may also be discussed,” the report states.
