Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder
A 31-year-old trainee doctor was murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata after midnight on August 8. Sanjay Roy, who is working as a civil volunteer in the same hospital, was arrested by the police as an accused in this heinous incident.
This atrocity happened in the seminar hall on the doctor who was resting after dinner. Her dead body was first seen by a fellow doctor on the morning of August 9th. Full timeline here.
From the morning of August 9.
- The body of the murdered trainee doctor was seen by a first year PGT doctor from the chest department at 9.30 am on August 9.
- The first General Diary (GDE 542) regarding this incident was registered at Tala Police Station at 10.10 am.
- At 10.10 am and 10.30 am, the police reached the spot of RG Kar. The seminar room where the rape and murder took place was sealed.
- Senior officers, forensic team along with photographer and videographer reached the spot between 11 am to 11.30 am.
- At 10.52 am the police officer informed the family members of the victim.
- The Kolkata Police Commissioner reached the spot at 12.30 pm.
- Doctors declared the victim dead at 12.44 pm.
- After the postmortem, the body was handed over to the police at 1.47 pm.
- At around 3.40 pm, MSVP (Medical Superintendent cum Vice Principal) of RG Kar hospital gave a secret letter to Tala Station Officer-in-Charge (OC).
- The letter said that an FIR should be registered as the dead body was found in a suspicious condition in the hospital.
- A police officer stated in the report given to the magistrate that when he went to the scene of the incident, he found an unconscious woman in a semi-naked state.
- The report stated that the private parts were injured.
- While the post-mortem was taking place, the police started examining the CCTV footage and all the entry and exit points. 11 people including four doctors who were on duty that night was interrogated.
- 40 exhibits were collected under videography between 8.30 pm to 10.45 pm.
- The FIR was registered at 11.45 pm.
The Supreme Court was outraged
The Supreme Court on Thursday criticized the Kolkata Police for its extreme delay in registering the case. Who was in touch with the principal of RG Kar Medical College after the murder incident came to light? Why the delay in registration of FIR? What’s the point?’ The bench asked. He asked how the postmortem was conducted at 6.10 pm on August 9 and the FIR was registered at 11.30 pm on the 9th.
