The deadline for adopting High Security Registration (HSRP) number plates for vehicles is ending on Sunday (September 15). The Transport Department has not taken a decision to impose fines against vehicles that do not have new plates installed.
Thus, vehicle owners can rest easy. But the deadline for installation of number plates is likely to be extended till December.
It was said that the penalty will be imposed from September 16. However, the hearing of the application submitted regarding the application of number plates will come up in the High Court on September 18. Therefore, the department officials have not decided on the imposition of penalty. Senior officials of the Transport Department have informed that the final decision will be taken after the inquiry whether to impose penalty or extend the deadline again.

Although the deadline for implementing HSRP has been extended three times, vehicle owners are showing no interest in adopting it. Out of the 1.70 crore old vehicles in the state, only 50 lakh vehicles have been fitted so far, so the deadline extension is inevitable. This rule is mandatory for old vehicles registered before A.1, 2019. The number plate assembly process is tendered to the authorized dealers of the vehicle manufacturing companies. The responsibility of number plate supply in the state has been given to seven or eight companies. More than 4000 dealer points have been identified across the state including Bangalore.
4th extension? The government, which had issued a notification on August 18, 2023, had imposed a deadline of November 17, 2023, for HSRP. Due to the apathy of the owners, it was allowed until February 17, 2024, again until May 31, and again until September 15.
How to get plate? Transport.karnataka.gov.in A¥ÜÊÝ Visit www.siam.in and click on Book HSRP. Select your vehicle, manufacturer and fill in basic vehicle details. If you choose a place for number plate installation, they will come and do the fitting.
