Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bhutan has been postponed. The Ministry of External Affairs said that PM Modi’s visit to Bhutan on March 21-22 has been postponed due to bad weather there and the new date of the visit will be announced soon.

The Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement and said, “It has been mutually decided to postpone Prime Minister Modi’s official visit to Bhutan due to bad weather conditions at Paro Airport. Both parties are considering new dates through diplomatic channels.

When did PM Modi go to Bhutan?

PM Modi was scheduled to pay a state visit to Bhutan on March 21-22. The Prime Minister had to meet the King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk and his father Jigme Singye Wangchuk (former King of Bhutan). Apart from this, PM Modi was also scheduled to hold talks with his Bhutanese counterpart Tshering Tobge.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said on PM Modi’s visit that the visit is in line with the tradition of regular high-level exchanges between India and Bhutan and the government’s emphasis on the ‘Neighbor First Policy’.

Why was PM Modi’s visit important for both countries?

PMO said that this visit of PM Modi is to exchange views on bilateral and regional matters of mutual interest to both sides. It will also provide an opportunity to discuss ways to expand and strengthen our exemplary partnership for the benefit of the people of both countries.

PM Modi’s visit to Bhutan was happening at a time when Prime Minister Tobagy was on a five-day visit to India.

The recent official visit of Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobge to India in March 2024 reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to enhance bilateral relations in various fields including development cooperation and vibrant economic relations.

PM Modi was invited by Bhutan PM

On March 14, he met Bhutan’s PM Tshering Togbe in New Delhi. The meeting took place at PM Modi’s official residence where Togbe invited PM Modi to visit Bhutan, which he accepted.
