Koo Shutting Down in India: Koo, known as Desi Twitter, will be shut down, founder confirmed, know the reason

Koo Shutting Down in India

The Indian app ‘Koo’ created to compete with Twitter aka X (Formerly Twitter) is now going to shut down. According to a report, online media company Daily Hunt was about to buy this app.

But this deal could not happen and now the app is on the verge of closing down.

Company founder confirmed
Koo’s founder Mayank Bidawatka confirmed this in a post on LinkedIn. He said that he was “in talks with many big internet companies, businessmen and media houses, but nothing was coming out of them.” He said that many companies “changed their priorities just before the deal.” Due to lack of funding for a long time and ‘market mood’, he had to slow down his pace and eventually decided to shut down the company.

Before Bidawatka’s post, The Morning Context had claimed in one of its reports that the deal between Koo and Daily Hunt had failed. The app became very popular in Brazil after its launch, for which many different reasons were given. However, this app could not gain the popularity in India as its founders had expected.

It was launched to compete with Twitter

Koo’s interface is very similar to Twitter aka X. On Koo, users could use features like ‘hashtags’ and ‘mentions’ in their posts. The special thing was that this app was available in many Indian languages like Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Assamese and Punjabi. Before the launch of Koo, there was disagreement between Twitter and the Government of India on some issues.

Had the support of the Government of India

This social media platform was also working with the Government of India on several projects. After winning the ‘Aatmanirbhar App Innovation Challenge’ under the Government of India’s “Make in India” initiative, Koo also received funding of six million dollars from well-known investors like Tiger Global and Accel. In April last year, after seeing a continuous decline in the number of users, the company decided to lay off 30 percent of its employees.

What did the founder say while leaving?

Bidawatka thanked his team for being with him in good and bad times. He said that if in the future someone has a ‘big vision’ for India on social media, then they would like to share their resources with him. He said that he would also consider making the coding of this app public so that people around the world can talk to each other in their local languages on the Internet.
