School fire accident

17 students died and 13 others were seriously injured in a fire in a school dormitory in Kenya. The police are worried that the death toll may increase.

14-year-old children

Police spokesperson Resila Onyango said the cause of Thursday night’s fire at Hillside Endarasha Primary in Nyeri County is being investigated. This school provides education and accommodation services for children up to 14 years of age. The Nyeri County Ministry of Education said there were more than 150 boys in the dormitory where the fire broke out. As most of the buildings were made of wood, the fire spread very quickly.

Due to wooden structures…

The school, which has 824 students, is located in the central highlands, about 200 kilometers north of the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, where wooden structures are common. Concerned parents were left in mourning as their children were not found among the survivors. Deputy Rigathi Gachagua has asked the school administrators to ensure that boarding schools follow the safety guidelines recommended by the Education Department.

A devastating thing

Kenyan President William Ruto described the news as “devastating”. “I have ordered the concerned authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into this horrific incident. We will punish those responsible,” he posted on social media platform X. Fires are common in Kenyan boarding schools, according to a recent report by the Ministry of Higher Education. Drug use in schools is also reported to be on the rise. Most students in Kenya stay in boarding schools. Parents believe that staying in hostels gives them more time to study.
